Just Jesse by Ben McDermott

Live & Kicking, UK, May 2000

Leaving Neighbours, swimming with sharks, being linked with Star Wars, it's all change for L&K's fave soapdish Jesse Spencer...

So you've left Neighbours. Why now?

Well my contract came up and that was the earliest I could get out. I left 'cause I didn't really enjoy it for the last two years... no I did enjoy it, but I just thought it was time to go. The work didn't excite me any more it had become boring.

So what do you fancy doing now?

I'll probably take a bit of a break. When I've finished doing panto I'm going to try to get some work in theatre. But it really depends on what comes up - I don't really get a choice about what I do. I wish that I could say I'll be doing this play or whatever, but I honestly don't know what I'll be doing next.

What'd you do if didn't get any work?

Dunno yet. I'll go travelling or whatever. I wouldn't go by myself, no way! That'd be really lonely! (Makes dullard-style face) 'No, I've got no friends, I'm sad'. Nah I'll go with mates - I want to drive all around Australia. I've toured round with my parents when I was little, but now I'm 20 I can choose where I go 'cause I can drive!

There's been a rumour that you're gonna play Anakin Skywalker in the next Star Wars movie...

(Laughs) No I was waiting for that one to come to England! The gossip's been rife in Australia for ages. But no it's not true. It started with kids in an internet chatroom saying I might be the next Anakin and then a magazine got a hold of this and printed it. The suddenly people were saying that I was doing deals with George Lucas and getting a light sabre. I was having a hoot watching the rumours snowball! My mates really ripped the Michael out of me. It was classic!

Do you often get recognised in the street?

Yeah, sometimes it's annoying when I've got to get somewhere in a hurry. But it depends on the person - some people are really rube and come up to you and demand stuff, but most are really nice. It's funny 'cause most people call me Billy and the other call me Jesse. I suppose they call me Bill 'cause that's who I've always been to them.

Are you looking forward to not being recognised?

Yeah, but it takes a while to die down. So people will still recognised me for ages. Will I change my look? Yeah, of course! I'm gonna get lodsa plastic surgery and have really long hair extensions put it. (Ha ha) No not really!

Is it hard keeping your relationships private?

No, not really. I suppose English media and that kind of gossip seem to go hand-in-hand but at home it's not such a huge thing. You don't get hounded so much'cause the Australian press is a lot more laid-back. The English tabloids are pretty full-on. I've had some pretty nasty experiences here, but I can't really go into it. Sorry, I really can't spread any rubbish. I just get really personal questions asked on the street. They're just so aggressive.

Would you ever live in the UK?

Oh yeah! It depends on work. If I can get work here I'll stay, if I don't I'll go home and get work. I'll go where the work is! But I've got friends and relatives here so I could easily live here.

Does the parp weather depress you?

Yeah it does a bit and being here is a bit strange to me. Back home there's this TV channel that shows lots of British films and all you see are grey concrete jungles, rain and this miserable-looking landscape. So when I'm here it's like I'm in a filme, it's crazy.

Are you into any dangerous sports?

Well I had two weeks diving in Bali (tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean) before I flew here to do the panto. The diving in Bali's fantastic - there's lodsa incredible fish, coral and lots and lots of water. (Ha ha) We swam with sea turtles and reef sharks. Was I scared? Nah ot at all they weren't that big (spreads arms out about six foot) and sharks are more scared of us than we are of them.

What's your next holiday?

I'll go snowboarding in France. I did it last year and it was awesome. I'll definitely do it this year too. We don't have any snow like that in Australia our runs are just a couple of minutes long and some of those runs in France can just take hours to get down.

So Jesse can you do any snoot jumps?

No I'm not that good, honestly. My best move is stacking. That's falling over, L&K! I'm pretty good at face planting too - that's when you fall flat on your face in the snow!

What's your fave thing in the UK?

My friends and the people here. I haven't travelled round much 'cause when I'm here I'm always working. I fancy surfing in Cornwall though. But I've got to get a full-length wettie (wetsuit) and a helmet. The sea's pretty cold here in the winter - you wouldn't want to go out there in your boardies (swimming togs) you'd die! When you've been in the water you'd come out freezin'. Brrrr! I'd end up looking like Mr Blobby!
