As Seen on TV... by David Kronke, TV Critic, LA Daily News la.com, USA, 7th August 2008
Heroes star and occasional drummer Greg Grunberg (who plays Matt Parker, the former cop who can read minds) was asked a few years back to throw together some friends and play a gig at the House of Blues.
"They had such a great time, (and when) they realized they could make money for charities, they did it on regular basis," says Jesse Spencer. He plays Dr. Robert Chase on the hit Fox series House and is the most recent addition to the "supergroup," where, as rock violinist, he tears it up on covers of The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" and the Charlie Daniels Band's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."
Today, the group has a name - Band From TV - and boasts an all-star lineup of actors who, yes, all appear on television. At Band From TV's gig Saturday at the Autry National Center of the American West in Griffith Park, Spencer and Grunberg will be joined by Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher (vocals) and James Denton (guitar), former Bachelor Bob Guiney (vocals) and special guests Hayden Panettiere and Adrian Pasdar (Grunberg's Heroes co-stars).
Following the free concert, continuing the theme of classic TV, episodes of series such as The Cosby Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show will be screened.
Spencer began taking classical violin lessons at age 8 in his homeland of Australia and recently bought an electric violin to play with Band From TV.
How did you come aboard?
Band From TV played the House wrap Christmas party in 2006. Hugh (Laurie, star of House) found out that I played violin and asked me to perform with them. It was kind of a disaster. We were under this marquee thing, and it was raining - the water was dripping down onto the stage around all that electrical equipment.
It was quite a dangerous gig. But I had such a good time, I thought I may as well start playing again.
Are there any songs in the band's repertoire that you really hate?
Yeah, to be honest. We have an encore song, "Shake a Tail Feather." It's a crowd-pleaser, it's easy to play, but I just think it's stupid. I hate it. I haven't told the band, but maybe now, they'll find out.
